Unit 4 Friend Reply – Week 2 Sholonda Clark(3 posts) 1. Assume that the company adopts the Balanced Scorecard. After operating for a year, there are -improvements in some performance measures but not in others. What should management do next? I think there is always a need for an organization to improve on their processes. When management notices that is still a need for improvement, they should take a look at what areas still need improvement, and hash out a plan to improve on the business and production processes, procedures, products, customer databases, and proprietary, copyrighted, or patented intellectual property. 2. How does the Balanced Scorecard communicate strategy to the organization? How is strategy translated into performance measures? The balance scorecard communicates strategy to an organization through Four Perspectives Financial – the strategy for growth, profitability, and risk viewed from the perspective of the shareholder. Customer – the strategy for creating value and differentiation from the perspective of the customer. Internal Business Processes – the strategic priorities for various business processes, which create customer and shareholder satisfaction. Learning and Growth – the priorities to create a climate that supports organization change, innovation, and growth. Leveraging the concept of the Balanced Scorecard the SAP Strategic Enterprise Management process puts strategy at the center to create strategic focus and strategic alignment and to enable organizations to translate strategy into action. 3. Why does the Balanced Scorecard differ from company to company? Whose responsibility is the implementation? Different organizations might require different levels of measurements. However, all organizations can expect better operating results when employees are well trained, motivated, committed, and encouraged to improve processes. The balanced scorecard differ from one company to another company because they are not alike. So they run their operations differently from one another. I say the implementation of the balanced scorecard should be the responsibility of management and whoever has an interest in the business. 4. Based on your understanding of the application of the Balanced Scorecard, discuss how an organization successfully creates and uses a BSC. First step: Establish certain key metrics for success–from both operating and financial points of view. Key operating metrics might run the gamut from production lead times to monthly scrap allowance; financial indicators might include revenue and earnings growth, asset turnover, balance sheet leverage, and most important of all, cash flow. When coming up with financial metrics, make sure to capture performance from three perspectives, as recorded in the company’s income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement. Each one tells a different story.) Next, draw up a “scorecard” to track results and changes over time. When effectively implemented, companies improve performance by measuring what matters and prioritizing work.” http://www.forbes.com/2008/04/29/small-business-management-ent-mange-cx_gm_0429genemarksmetric.html http://online.vitalsource.com/books/0077673794/page/832 Nickie Rosier(3 posts) Assume that the company adopts the Balanced Scorecard. After operating for a year, there are -improvements in some performance measures but not in others. What should management do next? Without knowing what areas did not improve I would make suggestions such as: improved customer service training, efficiency training, and definitely technological upgrades – make the pricing and charging automated to lessen the issue of pricing issues. In order to compete, the store must ensure that they are providing the best customer service possible. How does the Balanced Scorecard communicate strategy to the organization? How is strategy translated into performance measures? The Balanced Scorecard communicates vision and strategy through the four perspectives: Financial, Internal Business Process, Learning & Growth, and Customer. The Balance Scorecard translates the strategy by taking the company’s strategic plan from just being ideas on paper to being an action plan for the company to follow on a day-by-day basis (Balanced Scorecard Institute, 2015). Why does the Balanced Scorecard differ from company to company? Whose responsibility is the implementation? Every company has a vision that is exclusive to their industry, product, customer base, financial standing and overall goals. Each company also has its own set of flaws or areas that require attention and improvement. Because of this, each company would have different strategies per their balanced scorecard. The management team or key members from the management team should be responsible for developing and implementing the balanced scorecard. Based on your understanding of the application of the Balanced Scorecard, discuss how an organization successfully create and use a BSC. The company would first assemble a team to assess key areas that need attention/improvement. After which the team would then lay out the vision for the future state of the company. Next they would develop a plan to achieve the vision which will include listing the resources required to make the vision a reality. Once the resources are available, develop and activate the action plan. At set intervals (quarterly or yearly), review the progress and make revisions as needed. The Affordable Care Act Summary The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress and then signed into law by the President on March 23, 2010. Subsequently , on June 28, 2012 the Supreme Court rendered a final decision to uphold the health care law. This Act puts individuals, families and small business owners in control of their health care. It reduces premium costs for millions of working families and small businesses by providing hundreds of billions of dollars in tax relief – the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history. It also reduces what families will have to pay for health care by capping out-of-pocket expenses and requiring preventive care to be fully covered without any out-of-pocket expense. For Americans with insurance coverage who like what they have, they can keep it. Nothing in this act or anywhere in the bill forces anyone to change the insurance they have, period. Americans without insurance coverage will be able to choose the insurance coverage that works best for them in a new open, competitive insurance market – the same insurance market that every member of Congress will be required to use for their insurance. The insurance exchange will pool buying power and give Americans new affordable choices of private insurance plans that have to compete for their business based on cost and quality. Small business owners will not only be able to choose insurance coverage through this exchange, but will receive a new tax credit to help offset the cost of covering their employees. It keeps insurance companies honest by setting clear rules that rein in the worst insurance industry abuses. And it bans insurance companies from denying insurance coverage because of a person’s pre-existing medical conditions while giving consumers new power to appeal insurance company decisions that deny doctor ordered treatments covered by insurance. Analysis The purpose of human services legislation is to provide assurance and protection to clients’ quality of life, remove barriers, and expedite services. Sometimes, however, the effect of enacted legislation differs from the intention. When the outcome is undesirable, experts often suggest legislation reform to improve practices or delivery of human services. Evidence derived from research and legislative summaries are two ways to get others support legislation reform. Critics have blamed that the Affordable Care Act is a government takeover of the health-care system, which accounts for about a sixth of the economy. This criticism sounds hollow. Actually, as the law rolls out, some of the biggest threats to its success stem from the fact that its architects decided not to be more coercive. There are two major issues concerning this law, which can become a bone of contention between the critics and the supporters. The first one is the challenge to enroll large numbers of people in private insurance plans. To work well, the law’s new insurance marketplaces need millions to sign up and enough healthy people paying into the system to offset the medical costs of the sick. However according to the own admission of the Department of Health and Human Services, enrollment is lagging. The projection of 1.2 million has not yet been achieved. It is very likely that many more people will enroll as the HealthCare.gov Web site improves and as big coverage deadlines approach . But the results hinge on one critical bit of policy — the often-attacked individual mandate, which requires that nearly everyone in the country have health insurance by March or else pay a fee. Unfortunately, the mandate is weak. The penalty for lacking coverage next year is a mere $95, and it may be hard for the Internal Revenue Service to collect even that from some people. Healthy people might choose to forgo 12 months of premium payments and eat a much smaller annual fee. A larger fee, which was in early drafts of the law, would be a more effective incentive than what’s in place now. The second alarming development is related to the reports that insurance companies are using backdoor methods to dissuade ill — and therefore expensive — patients from enrolling in their plans. Before the Affordable Care Act, insurers simply rejected applications from people with preexisting conditions. Now that’s illegal, which is one of the law’s centerpiece achievements. So, patients rights groups worry, insurers are limiting access to important pharmaceuticals, such as anti-HIV drugs, to push the ill away. It is not known how widespread this practice will be. So far, only anecdotes have been heard about suspiciously designed coverage plans for prescription drugs. Over time, regulators could try to crack down on the practice if it becomes a problem. In the first few years, the law’s design should limit the benefits that companies could realize by screening out sick customers. But the fact that insurance companies have any opportunity to do this is the result of state and federal officials deciding to leave a number of decisions about drug coverage to insurance companies, instead of taking a prescriptive approach more akin to the rules that govern Medicare’s Part D drug program. Though the individual mandate’s penalty could have been made larger, not every problem can or should be solved by federal regulation, and there is still a decent chance that the balance between regulation and liberty that the Affordable Care Act struck will work. If it does, the more rational health-care system that results will have been well worth the price in expanded government intervention in the health-care market. There are certain myths surrounding the Affordable Care Act. The health-care law’s individual mandate, despite its name, isn’t meant to force Americans into health plans. Instead, it is supposed to encourage people to purchase coverage by giving them two options: Buy insurance or pay a fine. But it is extremely difficult for the IRS to recover penalty from individuals. If you like your health plan, you can keep it. Obama has repeatedly made this key promise about his signature legislation. In truth, the health-care law makes a number of changes to the insurance industry that will affect the nearly 165 million Americans covered by private plans. For one, it requires all health plans to include a wider set of benefits, among them maternity care and mental health services. It is argued that the health-care law will increase the deficit. However this is not true. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that, over the next decade, the health-care law will reduce the deficit by $109 billion. That’s because the Affordable Care Act includes new spending cuts and tax increases, which more than offset the cost of expanding health insurance to millions of Americans. The law’s new revenue sources fall into three main categories. First are cuts to Medicare providers, such as hospitals and doctors. Under the Affordable Care Act, the federal government will pay slightly lower rates. Second are cuts to private health insurance plans, known as Medicare Advantage plans that cover Medicare patients. The federal government has, in recent years, paid these private plans more to cover Medicare beneficiaries than it has spent on seniors who sign up for the traditional public program. The health law aims to reduce those differences by cutting Medicare Advantage payments. Lastly, the law includes new taxes on a number of health-care industries, including hospitals, medical-device makers, insurers and pharmaceutical companies. References Tate N.J. Philosophers, in general, regard it as intellectually irresponsible not to defend one's beliefs, or at least not to be prepared to do so if challenged. This is not to say that one's defenses are always successful. (Mosser, 2010) Philosophers feel that there is no point in having a belief in something if you are not able to justify why you believe in it or not. At the end of the day you may not get to an agreement with the person you talking to but at least you know that you justified it to the best of your knowledge. An advantage to believing something without examining it is if someone who fails to defend his or her views is unlikely to suffer any actual physical injuries. But philosophers do like to insist that philosophy offers a certain kind of protection, and offers one analogous weapons against one's opponent. Seen from this perspective, then, philosophy offers what might be called intellectual self–defense. (Mosser, 2010) A disadvantage is that you may have this belief but when someone asks you to explain why you are not able to explain it and look that this belief was just pressured on you. The subject I am passionate about is abortion. That has been a big ongoing debate about if it is right or wrong. I am big on it being wrong. This all boils down to how I was raised in the church to believe that murder is absolutely against the law of the Ten Commandments. By having an abortion one is killing the child that had no say in being brought into this world. One would argue what about incest or rape at the end of the day it’s my opinion and what i believe in and we will just have to agree to disagree. Reference: Mosser, K. (2010). Philosophy a Concise Introduction. San Diego, CA : Bridgepoint Education, Inc. According to the writer’s logic, beliefs have to be justified by logic. However, this may not be always possible. Sometimes we believe in divine power and cannot explain actions in a rational manner. Nevertheless, it is important to think critically and then take decisions. This would help us in avoiding taking an action in an hasty manner. The writer has expressed opinion about abortion, but left the views about rape and incest untouched. Agreed, rape and incest do not fall in the same category as abortion. One question that arises here is how about life of mother? If the childbirth puts the mother in danger, then whose life should the doctor save? Child or mother? The question is difficult to answer but then many people believe that life of mother is more important and her life cannot be sacrificed for the sake of an unborn child. The writer has said that this is what I believe in and we will just have to agree to disagree. But according to Socrates, our thinking should be done in rational manner and then only we can say that the decision is logical.
