History Discussion 1 Social Movements Social movements can change the world. According to Chapter Five of the text, Introduction Sociology, what social movements have been noted in the United States in the last decade? What implications have these movements had on today’s culture? Then, hypothesize what current social movements could transform the future of the world. The new social norm of the day is diversity. United States is a multicultural society and people staying here come from different cultural backgrounds. They observe their own customs and follow variety of religious faith. The people are of different races and have migrated to the United States from different countries around the world. (Section 5.1 Diversity “The New Social Norm Chapter 5). The real reason for the prevalence of diversity is ease of communication and travel around the world which has made the task easier for people to mix around and get exposed to new ways of working and living. The media has made the task much simpler with a flood of information at the click of a mouse. People are now aware of opportunities in different parts of the world and come to know the lifestyles. This gives them an incentive to consider living in other parts of the world. The implication of this is that cultural differences are going to lose its meaning. When people from different mix up, get married and settle down in life, there is bound to be a diversity of culture and chances are that at some time in the near future, it may not be able for people to identify where from they came along and their religion and customs. This trend is expected to change the way we look at the world and is sure to break the walls of discrimination. This would also give everyone a chance to learn something good (and also get exposed to bad as well!) of other societies. Discussion 2 Social Change The future of the world is uncertain; there are those who predict a wonderful world where technology and creativity provide a good quality of life for most people, while others predict a world of competition, conflict, and strife. Use the sociological theories provided in Chapter Five of the text, Introduction to explain why these polar opposites could both occur, and what needs to happen for peace and prosperity to result. There are several views prevailing about the future and how the world is going to shape up over a course of time. The speed at which technological development is taking place, has taken everyone by surprise. This has given people a choice to live good quality of life and enjoy the fruits of their labor. At the same time when one sees the conflicts, stresses and tensions prevailing in different parts of the world, one wonders where the world is going to end up. According to modernization theory, Poverty is thought to result because traditional values and customs pre- vent the society from being competitive in a global or international environment. If these traditional values can be replaced with ones that support the use of modern technology, material goods, and advanced services in a market-driven economy, the model presumes that poverty will be eradicated as more affluent ways of life are established. (Section 5.2 Demography and Population Trends). The process of modernization follow fours stages starting from traditional stage and moving towards high consumption of goods and services provided by the modernization of society. With people moving towards affluent areas for improving their lives, it is but natural that they would aim to migrate to those areas where they would get an opportunity to make their lifestyle better and richer. As per dependency theory, the economy of rich and poor nations is interdependent and neither can survive in isolation. The wealth of the richer nations is a cost of poorer nations. World Systems theory states that one cannot view nations in isolation as each one of them is dependent on one another for external resources. While countries are tied together in a variety of ways, it is the economic connections of goods, capital, and labor that unify them as they attempt to buy and sell goods and services in what is known as a commodity chain. (Section 5.2 Demography and Population Trends). So for peace and prosperity to happen it is important that people adopt the policy of live and let live. As it is they are interdependent and under no circumstances can they afford to break the cycle and bring chaos and disharmony.
