History Discussion 1 Relativism Give an example of something that one culture might regard as a virtue that another culture might not. Explain why this could lead to relativism. Relativism refers to the belief and values that one holds in terms of his own society, culture or his own individual beliefs and values. Sometimes we disagree with others and believe that our observation is much better than others. In fact relativism is in terms of the values of the community one lives in or belongs to. For example, in my culture soccer is the most entertaining sport to watch but your culture feels that basketball is the most entertaining sport to watch. !! You are right according to your culture and I am right as per my culture. There is no objectivity to this belief or view point. Discussion 2 Egoism and Altruism Psychological egoism claims that whatever we do, we do out of self-interest. Give an example of an act you think is not done out of self-interest, and explain how the psychological egoist might try to interpret that act as selfish. According to Psychological egoism, people carry out their day to day activities to maximize their own usefulness. To illustrate, if one is going for a basketball game and sees a homeless person on the way, he may give him money that he had planned to buy the ticket for the game. He thinks that this is giving him more happiness that watching the game itself. A psychological egoist would view this action as totally selfish because the person is helping the home less man only to make he feel virtuous and not for really helping the man buy a meal for himself.
